Revolutionaries, teenagers, shamans and priests, criminals and actores, people with mental disorders or ashamed to express themselves. Each one of these types, can be connected by a small object, a symbol, that caracterizes a big part of humanity and, as mutable as its expressions over the centuries, it keeps changing and evolving: the mask.
In most of the cases, in naming "mask", some of the first concepts that the word might remind, are probably centered in lie or at least, in mystery.
We tend to interpret the mask as a method to hide ourselves from others and to not reveal one or more aspects of ourselves. The roots of masquerading are old and universal (from the theatre of ancient Greece, to the several carnival rites) and have various interpretations, conflicting and common beliefs usually have a strong relevance in the general opinion: therefore, in an occidental modern world, in whose rituals are increasingly more explicit and appealing, is the mask really just one more method for lying and hiding?

You can also find a confirmation in those disguises that don't have a purpose other than playful and the celebration of the costume, like in the fields of historical restitutions, live dramatization or cosplay (from the crase of the terms costume and play, is the practice of recreating and wearing the clothes of a character from a movie, comics or animated series, and much more), all the activities and hobbies that lately seem to have attracted an increasingly diverse circle of fans.
In this case, the mask wants to be a method of personal expression that goes from the simple presentation of a figurine precisely made, until the creation of an entire world and new characters and, in a sort of mix of genders, the performance is connected.And theatrical art to ritual disguise.
In the four examples presented in the exhibition, the mask seems to be capable of breaking the more common stereotype of masquerading, whose purpose is just to hide one's identity; in these situations, in fact, once worn, being physical or imaginary, it becomes a method to communicate (and not to hide) one's own condition, in the attempt of making understand something about one's self or of establishing a dialogue on a par.

CABANAmad reopens its doors on 17th September with the group show CADA CANTO CADA CONTO which brings together artists, architects and designers - featuring works by by ana +betânia, Cosma, Catarina Croft, Marcel Dzama, Filipe Marinheiro, Carlos Mota, Marta Pombo, Emmanuelle Roule, José Sottomayor, Elisa Uberti, Kaja Upelj, Zieta - interpreting though different languages the significance of house and home. Home has always had a multitude of meanings that go beyond the idea of a physical place. Thinking about home, not only walls, doors, windows and roofs come to mind, but also colors, faces, smells, emotions and sensations. In English, there are two words to name the same place: house and home. House refers to a building, a physical construction, a place to inhabit. While home refers to a familiar environment, an intimacy - an emotional place, not a physical one. 
Home is, first of all, the first experience of borders, it determines an interior and an exterior, that might be more or less strict. It's the place where a person starts to define themself, where they feel secure and contained. Home is therefore secure, it's an expression of itself, but is also a space of life, to inhabit solo or to learn to share. 
Before being a place, a home is a space that we carry inside us. A way that lives in our hearts since immemorial times. Home is an ideal body that contains us and hosts us, manifests us and protects us. Home is a real place which we love and hate daily, suspended between protection and adventure, recognition and freedom. Home is a way of desire that sleeps in our thoughts and that lights up to the sound of a word, to the flash of a gesture.

With one foot in the symbolism -  this exhibition dedicated to ceramic, drawing and painting - brings together a set of works where the figuration triumphs to better represent the imagination.
What matters the most here is the figurative basis of each work, where the densest images, due to their details or to their symbolic layers, raise the imagination beyond  the reason.
The realism associated to narratives or to potential surreal scenes, establishes a bridge between dream and life, narrowing the limits that separate reason from delirium. Either in the landscapes, the figures, or the figures that are landscapes, truth and fantasy walk hand in hand, switch names and kiss each other's lips to become more and more merged.

During a trip we have the habit, perhaps even the instinct, of bringing an object home, something that can carry a little of what we've lived, an object that is more than just a memory - a souvenir. Travel by travel our home becomes a house of memories.
SOUVENIR, the French word for remembrance, is recognized and adopted by other languages as an object that reminds us of someone or something, usually a place. Object which presence and protagonism were shaken by the industrialization and the influence that it had on fine arts.
CABANAmad invites a group of artists and designers to interpret their concept of souvenir and compare it with the concept of two other artists and with some souvenirs from the past.

In the pursuit of a multifaceted programming, CABANAmad gallery brings together 3 artists who, despite working with different disciplines and media, have in their logic of appropriation and construction of forms, relevant points of contagion. April Key is an English designer living in Istanbul who develops works from sculpture logics bringing references to architectural forms, including deco architecture. Her lamps from the Ocean Drive collection were originally inspired by the colorful Kodakcromes with views of Miami found in an Istanbul flea market. As in the silhouette of a city, there is an accumulation of geometric-like shapes crowned with neons. These are materials that bring us to the brilliance and magic of any city. Key lamps are laser-made, and neon glass tubes are hand-made by experienced local artisans, giving them the same magical tenderness of the cities.
The same formal setting of the 1950s seems to suggest the universe of Monica Menez, who works and live in Stuttgart, and is fashion photographer, who likes to recreate cinematic environments. Alongside with fashion films, most of her photography is classified as product photography, as it is created for fashion magazines. The execution of the image requires a constructive process and a rigorous execution to reach a transgressive and sensual image. Although in some ways it touches kitsch and some unrealism, this regressiveness leads the creator to a sense of liberation and permissiveness. In other words, the pictures are the mirror of freedom that shapes big cities like Stuttgart. Monica Menez has worked for Vogue Portugal, as well as many other reference fashion titles.
Also in the work of Marco Laborda, a catalan artist living in Madrid, we find a constructive process and a certain surreal emotion in his collages on photography. Having the portrait as a reference, he deconstructs the images cropping and reconstructing them, applying collages. In this sense, he refuses a naturalistic logic by joining formal elements that disfigure the portrait and add a new plasticity to the final work. The new accumulated forms deepen the beings proposed to us and give them surrealistic aspects, an experience that meets the modernist path of the representation of the real. The disfigurements of beings created by Marco Laborda lead us to the world of transfiguration of being in the complexity of urban societies.

CABANAmad reunites a group of 5 photographers– Rui Aguiar, Pedro Cláudio, Rui Palma, Herberto Smith and Nuno Vieira  -  who have distinguished themselves in the field of fashion photography in Portugal. The idea is to create an intergenerational overview of the short history of Portuguese fashion photography which, broadly speaking, began with the first fashion magazines in 1987.

​The Italian artist Paolo Gonzato presents a project called COPY, the works presented at CABANAmad are "d'apres" by themselves, they are the copy made by the artist of his own works mainly pictorial, where the image undergoes a duplication not rigorous creating an ambiguity that does not allow to understand what the original is.

Some works appear different, in reality they are the magnification of details or have small "errors". The scales are distorted so some small works seem more defined than the same ones but bigger, reverberating like an echo in big signs inside the gallery .
